Balancing Motherhood and a Thriving Career: Insights from Female Portfolio Managers in the Sectional Title Industry

In August we celebrate women and all that they do in our industry, in our lives, in our society and our families.

ZDFin can confirm with, absolute certainty, that the sectional title industry is dominated by intelligent, hardworking and well-rounded women who are the key ingredient to the success of the industry, and it was for this reason that ZDFin  was one of the first companies to step up and support WIST (Women in Sectional Title), and this remains something we feel very passionate about. WIST was set up as a platform for Women in Sectional Title so that they can “network, learn, share knowledge, collaborate with, and inspire each other, while gaining access to the resources they need to succeed”.

With ZDFin’s founder, Michael Schaefer, having sectional title industry experience at the frontlines of Property Management, Finance and Insurance for almost two decades before the birth of ZDFin, states: “the sectional title Industry, having been previously male dominated is now, in my opinion, switching over to being mostly a female profession which is being lead by strong and hardworking women, and as a result it is critical to create a supportive work environment to enable these new leaders in the industry to thrive.”

Being a working mother in the work place is an impossible and unsustainable challenge. Between the self-imposed pressure to perform, stacked up against societies unrealistic pressures which have been placed on women to perform as employees without children, and expecting them to show the dedication of a homeschooling mother without any other obligations, we are setting ourselves for failure and burnout.

As a society we (women and men alike) need to drastically change our unrealistic expectations that women can be super-heroes, and take steps to create a healthy working environment where we can comfortably lean on our colleagues and superiors to succeed and thrive as mothers and employees is vital.

In this article we look at some thoughts and experiences of female portfolio managers and steps they have taken to navigate their roles as working women managing multiple portfolios while thriving as fundamental parts of a business.

  1. Recognising the Challenges:

Balancing the demands of motherhood with a demanding career requires resilience and adaptability. Female portfolio managers often face added pressure to prove themselves, while also juggling their responsibilities as mothers. It’s important to acknowledge these challenges and develop strategies to mitigate their impact.

  1. Building a Support Network:

One key strategy for success is building a strong support network. Surrounding yourself with supportive colleagues, friends, and family who understand the unique demands of your dual roles can provide emotional support and practical assistance when needed. Lean on this network for advice, guidance, and encouragement.

  1. Time Management and Prioritisation:

Efficient time management is crucial for working mothers. Set clear boundaries between work and personal life, and establish priorities to ensure that both your career and family receive the attention they deserve. Delegate tasks when possible, and make use of technology and organizational tools to optimize your productivity.

  1. Negotiating Flexibility:

Advocate for flexible working arrangements that accommodate the needs of both your career and family. Approach your employer or clients with well-thought-out proposals for alternative work hours, remote work options, or part-time arrangements for new mothers and younger children. Clearly communicate the benefits of flexibility to all stakeholders involved.

  1. Overcoming Gender Inequality:

Unfortunately, gender inequality still persists in many industries, including the sectional title industry. It’s crucial to actively challenge these biases and advocate for equal treatment and opportunities. Seek out mentorship and networking opportunities to connect with other female professionals in your industry, and learn from their experiences in navigating the challenges of gender inequality.

  1. Continuous Learning and Development:

To thrive in a competitive industry, it’s important to continuously update your skills and knowledge. Stay informed about the latest trends and advancements in the sectional title industry through professional development opportunities, such as attending conferences, workshops, and pursuing relevant certifications. Investing in your own growth will not only benefit your career but also set a positive example for your children. This is where WIST plays a fundamental role in our industry.

Remember, finding the right balance between your professional and personal life is a continuous journey. It’s important to be kind to yourself and to prioritize self-care along the way.

We thank all the women in our lives and in our profession for their unwavering strength and dedication and will continue to endeavour to work towards a more balanced life.
